I have a plan to walk as much of the Parish Boundary as possible, taking photos of interesting things along the way.
The current boundary is to the left - from the Neighbourhood Plan Document. The parish was first defined in around 1894 when it was carved out of Broughton East Parish and became Grange Sanitary District. It grew in 1914 when chunks of Upper Allithwate were incorporated into the parish (Parts of Kents Bank and Wartbarrow mainly). The boundary (excluding that which is on the sands) is just over 7 miles long, 4.75 of which is alongside public highways / rights of way, or other publicly accessible land. As part of the project I am hoping to track down the Boundary Change Order from 1914, as well as the original Boundary Remark Books that were drawn up by the Ordnance Survey - which show what the surveyor noted on a similar perambulation in 1889, and what the exact boundary is (such as 'root of hedge' and so on). Not being an ancient boundary, I am not expecting to find any historic boundary stones or anything of that nature - but it should be interesting anyway. I'll update this page as I go along.
