Inclosure [Enclosure] Award Click here to go back to A-Z page
Cartmel Fell Inclosure Award was completed between 1796 and 1809. It was a long process, and great explanations of this can be found in Stockwell's Annals of Cartmel. Cartmel Fell parish at the time covered a vast area - all the peninsula, and up almost to Winster. There were a number of townships - one of which was Broughton. Grange Urban District was carved out of Broughton in 1894. Much of the land had already been enclosed before 1796. The Inclosure Award map shows the newly enclosed land - it's easily identifiable being numbered and with straight boundaries. The Award itself, along with the pre-award survey maps make fascinating studies - and they're all available in the Cumbria Record Office in Kendal.
